Q1. Who sits on the selection committee?
Senior management of The Business Times, KPMG, International Enterprise Singapore, Singapore Business Federation, Singapore Exchange and SPRING Singapore sit on the judging panel.
Q2. Why top 50? Why not top 10 or top 100?
We believe that 50 is a fairly representative number of organisations to consider for a country of Singapore's size and level of business activity. However, we are very open to extending this award to a greater number of companies if and when it is appropriate.
Q3. Will preference be given to organisations involved in a particular area eg. manufacturing?
We consider all fields of business to be important to Singapore's continuing growth. As such, we do not wish to confine the awards to any particular area.
Q4. Why aren't partnerships and sole-proprieterships eligible? Aren't these companies just as enterprising, if not more so?
You are absolutely right. We do recognise the enterprising spirit of such ventures. However, we wanted to focus on incorporated companies as they would have consistent audited financial records. This would ensure an equitable comparison amongst the participating companies.
Q5. If a company's turnover is high, can it expect to be ranked high too?
In ranking the top fifty companies, we look at factors which would reflect a company's enterprising spirit. Turnover is only one of the factors - growth and vision in going regional, knowledge management skills etc are also considered.
Q6. Is this an internationally-recognised award?
Enterprise 50 is designed to be a local award that takes into account local market conditions. While the award may not yet be available internationally, we believe that it would be recognised internationally for what it is - an award for business excellence in the local market.
